Ready, set, sugar! Here, you’ll find all the tips and tricks to get you through any sticky situation and help you master the technique for perfectly smooth skin. And just remember - sugaring gets sweeter with practice.

The Cheat Sheet

If you’re sugaring for the first time, please read ALL instructions carefully. Incorrect use could cause bruising and inconsistent removal of hair.

Does it hurt?

There’s some degree of discomfort with any form of hair removal from the root. But, tons of our customers say that sugaring is far less painful than traditional wax, since the sugar paste adheres to your hair only and not the skin.

DOH Prep

👉 Make sure your skin is clean, dry, and at room temperature. Thoroughly wash your body of any moisturizers and oils, then wait about 10 minutes before you start sugaring.

👉TIP: Exfoliate 48 hours before you plan to sugar to ensure clean skin. Removing dead skin makes it easier for the paste to grab the hair.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How do I get rid of ingrown hairs?

The two biggest things you can do to prevent an ingrown hair is -  exfoliate! (chemical or physical) and moisturize (either an oil or a cream). Exfoliating regularly (every 2 days) between sugaring will keep your skin soft, happy, prepped for the next session and most importantly – ingrown hair-free. Avoid exfoliating any less than 48 hours before sugaring and avoid other scrubs, AHAs, and loofahs may irritate the skin.

What’s the shelf life of the doh?

Shelf life is generally two years but can last longer if stored in a cool, dry place. The best-by date will be marked on the bottom of the jar.

My doh isn’t sticking to the skin, what do i do?

If you are struggling to pick up any hairs with your doh, try adjusting your technique. Be sure to apply the doh in the direction of hair growth with the tips of your fingers or applicator and mold multiple times before the flick. Another reason you may be struggling is that your hair isn’t long enough. If your hair is stubbly, you may need to wait a few days before you sugar. Lastly, your doh might not be warmed up enough - try either popping it in the microwave for 15 seconds or playing with the doh to heat it up before sugaring again.

Can you sugar your face and brows?

Yes! For sugaring smaller areas of the face, check out our Sugaring School tips and tricks here.

How do you dispose of the doh?

You can either throw the DOH away (ideally, in your compost bin) or run it under some warm/hot water until it melts away. If you think the DOH still has some elasticity and life to it, you can toss it back in your jar and use it again later.

Can I use doh on my underarms?

Yes! For sugaring smaller areas of the body, check out our Sugaring School tips and tricks here.

What’s the difference between medium and firm

This is a great question. Firm and Medium differ slightly... Here is a breakdown of their main differences:

Firm (recommended for beginners):

👉 Great for the bikini area and underarms

👉 Nice for people whose skin runs warmer rather than colder

👉 A better option for people that want to try to use their hands as an applicator

Medium:

👉 Great for large areas like your legs and arms

👉 Recommended for upper lip and face

👉 Nice for people whose skin runs colder rather than warmer

👉 Amazing paired with the Sugardoh applicator and cloth strips

👉 Awesome for people with finer hair

If you are a beginner, I would recommend going with Firm. While the medium is better for your legs, arms or face, you can always use the firm in those areas but heat it up for 10-15 seconds to get a similar consistency as the medium.

How often should you sugar?

Naturally, hair growth cycles vary from person to person, but here is a general rule of thumb for different areas:

👉 underarms: 2-3 weeks

👉 legs / arms: 3 weeks

👉 face: 1-2 weeks

👉 pubic: 2-3 weeks

How to re-soften my doh?

Sometimes the doh just needs a little reset, which is completely normal! To do that, pop the jar of sugar in the microwave for about a minute and then mix it up a bit. Be careful when removing the sugar from the microwave because it will be EXTREMELY hot. Using an oven mitten or glove will definitely help. After mixing, let the sugar sit and cool for about an hour and it should be ready to go!

Is it OK to sugar if I have sensitive skin?

Sugaring is great for sensitive skin and much more gentle than traditional wax. The doh will only stick to hair and dead skin cells (resulting in exfoliation).

Is it normal to have skin irritation after sugaring?

If your skin is on the more sensitive side, avoid applying product to anywhere affected for at least 24 hours after you sugar, if possible. Your pores are freshly opened so it’s really easy for them to be irritated. You may want to avoid touching it too! The good news is, the more you sugar, the more your skin gets used to having hairs pulled out from the root but the first few times you’ll need to be super careful.

Why am I bruising?

A little bruising is completely normal for beginners! Sugaring has a learning curve, so it can take some time to perfect your technique. To avoid bruising, make sure that you're holding your skin as taut as possible before your flick. Also, be sure to flick parallel to the skin and commit to the flick!

I’m getting Redness/Bumps is this normal?

The red bumps at the follicle are completely normal! Sugaring allows you to remove hair from its root, which tends to leave skin a little lost and confused. Redness, hive-like bumps, and a little pinpoint bleeding are all completely normal. To treat the irritation, apply a cold compress to the affected areas. This, and the application of our aloe-based Soothe Me calming serum will help relieve the irritation and reduce redness. As you continue your sugaring journey, you'll notice less and less irritation. The skin just needs a little time to adjust!

I think my DOH is too sticky, help!

Handling the DOH can be a little sticky (and messy) sometimes, and that's okay!

Play around with your sugar a bit and get familiar with the different stages of the sugar. You'll notice when it gets too warm it can be more on the sticky side and when it's cool it gets a little harder to mold and move around.

If you notice that it's getting warm a little too fast and sticking too much, the applicator is the way to go! This will help keep the sugar DOH from warming up too fast because our hands carry a lot of heat. You can also put the ball of sugar you plan on using on some parchment paper in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes before you start your session.

My DOH isn’t grabbing all the hairs, what should I do?

Sugaring does have a learning curve and it takes a bit of practice to find what techniques work for you. To prevent or lessen hairs being left behind, try slowly molding a couple more times before flicking. The slow molds will help the DOH wrap around all of the hairs and the more you mold the better. This will help encourage more hairs to be grabbed and removed from the root!
